Richard Wagner ‘s 4-opera cycle (The Ring) presents deities as quasi-humans. Unable to resist the urge to write my own 4-opera cycle I decided to present deities as the humans they originally were in pre-history, as detailed below. The monstrous nature of this project was that I decided I should begin by writing 4 libretti which, as they developed became 4 plays, which are now available to be read – and maybe performed with music portions as the operas (ever) get written. Here’s my summary of what all this involves.
This 4-opera project is so big that, of course, will need to find sponsors in the corporate sector to pay for my time in Writing it. Surprise? To many a 4-opera cycle on Atlantis would sound an outmoded idea, but actually deals with many contemporary issues, and presents past deities as the mere humans they were before being posthumously promoted (the usual deal)! And I plan to use a lot of today’s dance & pop music in the score, as composers did for their operas in their baroque era! I have written the 4 libretti, so all set to go. My business model is to write for the audience as composers in previous eras did (not for academics who seek to dictate creative agenda). Investment in creating product would yield a tiny % of the earnings for all if the project succeeds. My attempts to obtain funding via Oz Council in the 1990s all failed despite constant kind backing and offers to workshop from (then) artistic director Moffatt Oxenbould. “ATLANTIS” for flute/alto flute & piano was performed in Adelaide, South Australia, at a lunchtime concert given by Recitals Australia at 12.10pm on November 8, 2017, by flautist Jennifer Bird and pianist Won Jung Lee. The venue was Pilgrim Church, 12 Flinders Street, Adelaide.
I have frequently written for piano in numerous chamber works, and also for solo piano. My "Atlantis Variations" awaits its world premiere! I trust you may find it suitable for a virtuoso pianist. It’s a 50-minute work in 3 parts. You will find a movement from Pt 3 for solo piano: "Triple Conjunction" of Earth, Moon and Venus attracting a rogue asteroid into collision with Earth on the Soundcloud button below. Leitmotifs combine and twist as the end approaches.
