piano. Alan Vivian is one of Australia's highest profile musicians. He has held positions of Principal Clarinet of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra and Canberra Symphony Orchestra - and Guest Principle Clarinet with the BBC Symphony in London. As a chamber musician with the Australia Ensemble, the Canberra Wind Soloists, and as a concerto soloist for the ABC, he has performed nationally and internationally, touring to over twenty countries on five continents. He appears on recordings under the Sony, EMI, Polygram and ABC Classics Labels, and is a featured Artist in Pamela Weston's book, "Clarinet Virtuosi of Today". In "Fancy That!", Alan Vivian performs
repertoire of his choice, joined by his colleague at the
Canberra School of Music, pianist Susanne Powell. The works
are distinguished by melodic charm, impeccable musical
structure and, where appropriate, intelligent and appealing
use of counterpoint. LEONARD BERNSTEIN (1918-1990) Sonata

Compact Dlsc PRODUCED BY ROBERT ALLWORTH 3rd July 2003 DISTRIBUTED BY BROAD MUSIC "WHEN THE WORLD WAS GREEN" JADCD 1098 The title track is a solo piano work by Carr-Boyd, performed by the composer, being part of incidental music composed for the play of that name by Sam Shepherd which had its premier season in Australia at the Belvoir Downstairs Theatre in Sydney, 1998. Carr-Boyd's popular "Fandango" is also featured, as played by the Sydney Mandolins. They also give the premiere recording of "For A Gentle Soul" (2000) by Gross, a work subtitled "Remembering Peter Platt", a friend and colleague of the composer. Allworth's 20-minute work "Variations for Piano" (1972) is performed by David Miller, and is in one continuous movement, presenting themes which succeed each other in and endless melodic flow, creating a "Lotus Land" atmosphere. “MUSIC FOR ALL SEASONS” JADCD 1097 Featured players in this engaging CD are Michael Hooper, mandolin; Esther Cheng, violin; Michael Tabrett, viola & Catherine Tabrett, 'cello. This group premieres new works by Gross & Allworth. Adding to Gross' already substantial contribution to mandolin repertoire is CONCERTO DA CAMERA (1997) in 4 movements. Reflecting, in its structure, the musical traditions of Vienna and, in particular, the work of 18th century Czech composer Dusek. Gross achieves a pleasing fusion of past and present. A work of distinctive modernity. Also pleasing, and written for the same ensemble, are 3 new works by Allworth: MUSIC FOR ALL SEASONS is autumnal in character, giving clear themes in 12-note formations and sequential forms. In MEDITATIONS prominence is given to the mandolin, while in FOREVER SUNSET, inspired by Tennyson's poem "The Lotus Eaters", the ensemble creates colouristic effects. Carr-Boyd's SUITE VERONIQUE for solo harpsichord (1982) places modern dance and folk rhythms in the structure of a baroque suite. The CD closes with a historic recording by the Choir of Christ Church St. Lawrence in Sydney, 1979, "CONCERTO
- AUSTRALIA SUITE" JADCD 1093 This CD comprises two major concert works which have been digitally remastered from earlier releases and are now available on one CD. Concerto No. 2 for Mandolin & Chamber orchestra Op. 151, by Eric Gross is dedicated to Paul Hooper who plays the solo part in this recording, with the Tasmanian Symphony orchestra conducted by Patrick Thomas. The two outer movements feature patterns of dialogue between soloist and orchestra. In the second movement, to quote the composer, a succession of "intense string passages are answered by mandolin cadenzas written especially to exploit the musicianship and technical mastery of Paul Hooper. " Robert Allworth's "Australia Suite" is composed (in the composer's words) "in a style somewhat reminiscent of Stravinsky's Ballet AGON where the orchestra is used in sections and only occasionally at full strength. The Suite comprises 9 movements each of which employs skilful orchestral devices to portray a different time and place at various locations across the Australian continent. Patrick Thomas conducts the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. "ALBUM LEAVES" JADCD 1023 Works by: Robert Allworth, Lawrence Bartlett, Ann Carr-Boyd, Eric Gross. Never a dull moment in this CD's 17 tracks, not even in Holland's "The Composer Falling Asleep"(1994), a short and witty portrayal of Allworth dozing off "during the course of an overly long and tedious concert"! "BEST OF COLIN BRUMBY" JADCD 1062 Works: by Colin Brumby, Eric Gross, Dulcie Holland, Robert Allworth, Duration: 69.29 Brumby's music on earlier CDs has proved so popular that several have completely or almost sold out. Duration:60'23" This appealing CD is named after a piano suite by Brumby performed by Ray Lemond, who also plays attractive works by himself, by Allworth and Gross. A highlight is Holland's 1952 Piano Sonata (duration 18'20") a magnificent work of romantic fervour!
